About Department

Department of Economics has been an integral part of Shikshan Maharishi Dadasaheb Limaye Arts, Commerce and Science College Kalamboli since its inception (1998). This department offers degree courses as per prescribed syllabus of University of Mumbai. The focus of this department is to make the subject of economics student friendly. The department has always focused on introducing the students to the latest developments, new perspectives in the field of economics to apply the theoretical tools of economics in real life situations.
In the future, the college plans to start post-graduate studies in economics. This department will guide to students for competitive exams like MPSC, UPSC- IAS, IES, SET/ NET, Grade B of RBI.

Vision & Mission

  • To teach students the basic concepts and principles of economics and to create a strong foundation for pursuing higher education.
  • To provide highly qualified, well-rounded and motivated students with sound knowledge of the subject and apply it in the real world to serve the society.
  • To motivate students for self-improvement through continuous expansion of better knowledge and personality development.
  • To enhance the analytical and logical abilities of the students to enable them to pursue a technical career in the field of economics.

  • To prepare students to acquire applied knowledge of economics and enhance their employability skills.
  • To make conscious efforts to increase students’ interest in higher education.
  • To guide the students regarding career and entrepreneurship.
  • To encourage students to go beyond the boundaries of the prescribed curriculum to assess economic issues using skills and tools both inside and outside the classroom.

Objectives

  • To Completing the Syllabus prescribed by the University in time keeping in mind the ability of the students.

  • To help students analyze the current phase of Indian economy from local to global perspective.
  • To acquaint the students with the emerging issues of business at the international level in the light of liberalization, globalization and privatization policies through the Syllabus.

SWOC

Strength

  • The Department of Economics has qualified and experienced teachers.
  • There is a progressive tradition of third year result.
  • The Department has undertaken various activities to create awareness among the students about socio-economic phenomena.
  • Organization of various programs for overall personality development of students.
  • Maximum number of students from rural areas and low income groups.
  • Certificate Courses have been organized to give scope to the talents of the students.
  • To familiarize the students with the economics study method along with local issues.
  • Organizing industrial visits regularly.

Weakness

  • Separate departmental infrastructure is not available for Economics Department.
  • There is no separate library of economics.
  • There is no post graduate department for economics subject for students.
  • The number of students has decreased due to the opening of new colleges in the vicinity of the college and the introduction of the same courses in the college.

Opportunities

  • Providing quality education to economically weaker section students.
  • Involvement of industrialists, government officials and social workers as resource persons in the teaching of certain subjects in the syllabus prescribed by the University.
  • To create awareness among students and society about various economic and social issues.
  • To participate in various welfare activities.
  • Enhancing consultation, collaboration, MoUs and linkages.
  • Establishment of PG and Research Center of Economics.

Teaching methods

Lecture methods:

  • Four lectures per week of 48 minutes for each subject are fixed for first Third year undergraduate classes.
  • Three lectures per week of 48 minutes for each subject are fixed for Second & Third year Project Paper undergraduate classes.

Experiential Learning:-
Visits to various industries and organizations, poster exhibition and elocution competition are organized for the students. Every year a food festival is organized under the subject of Advertising.
