History of SMDL College

Sudhagad Education Society’s Shikshan Maharshi DadaSaheb Limaye College of Arts Commerce and Science, Kalamboli – Navi Mumbai was established in 1998. Since then it has been providing Education to the students of rural area and the children of Mathadi Workers from Kalamboli and nearby villages of Navi Mumbai for the noble cause.

Our college is progressing day by day and bound to Quality Education. S.E.S started SMDL College with an objective that nobody should be deprived of higher education only due to the weak financial background. The college was started with students strength of 53 students. In the present academic year, the strength of students is nearly 680 and the college is affiliated to the University of Mumbai.
We have post graduation center for Arts faculty (M.A. in History). Competitive examination center trains and motivates students for MPSC, UPSC, Bank, and Railway examinations. The College has organized Disaster management training every year for students and also organized Karate training to the Girl Students.

We are greatly motivated by Hon. Vasantseth Oswal Saheb, Chairman of Sudhagad Education Society and Hon. Ravindraji Limaye, vice-President of Sudhagad Education Society for such a development of College programmes and activities.

Our Founder

स्वातंत्र्य लढ्यातील अग्रणी स्वातंत्र्यसैनिक, आदिवासी सेवक, शिक्षण महर्षी आणि रायगड जिल्हा परिषदेचे पहिले अध्यक्ष केशव गोविंद तथा दादासाहेब लिमये म्हणजे गांधीवादी विचारसरणीतील अनन्यसाधारण असे व्यक्तिमत्व होते. २९ नोव्हेंबर १९०९ रोजी त्यांचा जन्म पाली (सुधागड) येथे झाला. समाजसुधारक महात्मा ज्योतिबा फुले आणि राष्ट्रपिता महात्मा गांधी यांच्या मार्गाने जायचा त्यांचा निश्चय त्यांनी शेवटपर्यंत अंगीकारला. हे करताना त्यांनी कौटुंबिक मर्यादा स्वतःवर कधीच येऊ दिल्या नाहीत, मात्र कौटुंबिक जबाबदाऱ्या नाकारल्याही नाहीत. पुञ, सून, पत्नी आणि कन्या यांचे एकामागून एक मृत्यू झाले असताना दुखाने ते खचले नाहीत. दादांचे शिक्षण हे राष्ट्रीय शाळेत झाले, त्यावेळी स्वातंत्र्य चळवळीचे वारे जोरात वाहत होते. घरात सेवादलाचे वातावरण होते. स्वदेशीच्या वापराचे आजन्म व्रत जोपासणारे लिमये कुटुंब चरख्यावर सुत काढीत असे.

शिक्षणासाठी तळेगाव-दाभाडे येथील “समर्थ विद्यालयाची” निवड दादांच्या वडिलांनी केली. १९२२ साली कै. अण्णासाहेब विजापुरकर यांनी “समर्थ विद्यालय” या नावाने राष्ट्रीय शिक्षण संस्था काढली होती. सरकारी मान्यता नव्हती आणि संस्था अनुदानही घेत नसे. मुख्याध्यापक म्हणून डेक्कन कॉलेजचे पदवीधर कै.भाऊ रानडे होते. भाऊ रानडे सेवादलाचेही काम करत असत. त्यांना व्यायामाची आवड होती. त्यांचे शरीरही पिळदार होते. ते स्वतः व्यायाम करत व आपल्या विद्यार्थ्यांना व्यायाम करावयास लावत. दादांनी १९२२-१९२९ पर्यंत या विद्यालयात शिक्षण घेतले. त्यात अनेक विषयांचा अभ्यास केला. लौकिकार्थाने डॉक्टर वा इंजिनीअर अशी पदवी त्यांना मिळाली नाही. वाचनाची, व्यायामाची व खेळाची गोडी लागल्याने खेळातील अनेक बक्षिसे शाळेला मिळवून दिली. ४० मैल चालायची सवय दादांना याच शाळेत लागली.

समर्थ विद्यालयातील राष्ट्रीय शिक्षण पूर्ण करून दादा पुण्याच्या शेतकी महाविद्यालयात प्रवेश मिळवण्यासाठी गेले. पण दादा मान्यताप्राप्त शाळेचे विद्यार्थी नसल्याने उपप्राचार्य गोखले यांनी त्यांना प्रवेश नाकारला. शेतकी महाविद्यालयाचे प्राचार्य बर्न्स यांची दादांनी भेट घेतली, सांगितले, माझ्या घरची शेती आहे. मी शेतकरी आहे. त्यावेळी मि.बर्न्स यांनी प्रश्न केला की तू पदवी परीक्षेनंतर काय करणार? दादांनी उत्तर दिले की “मी शेती करणार आहे”. तेव्हा मि. बर्न्सनी शाळेत प्रवेश दिला. याच काळात त्यांनी देशातील विविध राज्यांचा अभ्यास केला. दादांनी ज्यांना आई-वडील कोणी नाही , आशा दलित-पिडीत मुलांना शिक्षण दिले.

१९३० मध्ये हरिजन संघाच्या स्थापनेनंतर अस्पृश्यता निवारणाच्या चळवळीत ते डॉ.बाबासहेब आंबेडकर यांच्याबरोबर कार्यरत होते. त्यातूनच त्यांनी पालीमध्ये हरिजन मुलांची शाळा सुरु करून मोठे धाडस केले होते. महाडमध्ये पाण्याचा सत्याग्रह डॉ. आंबेडकरांनी केला त्यावेळी पालीच्या हरिजनांना आपल्या विहिरीवर पाणी भरण्यास देऊन, सनातनी समाजाच्या बहिष्कारालाही त्यांनी तोंड दिले. भारतास स्वातंत्र्य मिळाले तेव्हा पालीच्या बल्लाळेश्वर मंदिरात ताशा-वाजन्त्रीसह हरीजनांना सोबत घेऊन दादांनी प्रवेश केला आणि हरिजनांना स्वातंत्र्याची खऱ्या अर्थाने चव चाखायला मिळाली. १९४१ मध्ये कै.दादांनी सुधागड एज्युकेशन सोसायटीची स्थापना करून ग्रामीण भागात माध्यमिक शिक्षणाची सोय उपलब्ध करून दिली. दादासाहेब लिमये हे एक उद्योजकही होते. ते कट्टर कार्यकर्ते होते. १९६२मध्ये तत्कालीन कुलाबा परिषदेची पहिली निवडणूक झाली. सुधागडमधून ते निवडून आले. जिल्ह्याच्या प्रश्नांची जाण असलेले एकमेव व्यक्तिमत्व म्हणून लिमये, जिल्हा परिषदेचे पहिले अध्यक्ष झाले. निधनाच्यावेळी ते एकशेएक वर्षांचे होते.

Our Principal

As I walk down the hallways of the college every day, I can hear the chatter of eager minds, the shouts of excitement from the victorious athletes, the thump of dancer’s feet and the sound of melodious voices harmonizing. The perpetual energy, movement, and enthusiasm permeate the atmosphere at SMDL College. We are a college with a difference! We value individualism, creativity, and innovation and strive to nurture them in our students.

Educational institutions are aplenty, all of which impart learning, but it is our prayer that our students go out into the world with the strength, not only to reach and excel in their professional aspirations but to remain beautiful human beings.
